About the Georgia Tech Research News & Publications Office
The Georgia Tech Research News & Publications Office publishes Research Horizons magazine and provides media relations and other communications support for research activities in the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Georgia Tech academic colleges and centers, and the Enterprise Innovation Institute. The Research News & Publications Office is supported by GTRI and Georgia Tech’s Executive Vice President for Research.
John Toon, Manager
John Toon is manager of the Georgia Tech Research News & Publications Office and editor of Georgia Tech’s Research Horizons magazine. He has more than 30 years of experience in communications, including media relations, publications, photography, advertising, speech writing and Web design/maintenance.
John joined Georgia Tech in 1987 after working as a reporter for two Athens newspapers, and as a correspondent for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He also led the industrial advertising program for the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism (now the Georgia Department of Economic Development), and was part of the staff responsible for launching the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC), Georgia Tech’s science and technology incubator.
He has served on the advisory board for the Media and Government Relations Division of the American Institute of Physics. He has published and presented on communications topics, and contributed a chapter on communicating science for A Field Guide for Science Writers published by the National Association of Science Writers. He is a member of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). John received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Rick Robinson, Communications Officer
Rick Robinson is a communications officer with the Georgia Tech Research News & Publications Office. He joined Georgia Tech as a graduate research assistant in 1994 and has served the office in a number of roles.
Rick has 26 years of experience in communications and journalism as a reporter, writer, editor, photographer and Web designer. He has worked in reporting and/or editorial capacities for The Daily Oklahoman, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Daily Hampshire Gazette and The Wall Street Journal. Rick has received three reporting awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.
He holds a master’s degree in the history of technology from Georgia Tech, a master’s degree in theatre and speech from Smith College and a bachelor’s degree in English from Columbia University. He completed three years of doctoral-level coursework and research in American history at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Rick is a member of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW).
